The Palermo preliminary hearing judge sentenced Giovanni Luppino, the entrepreneur from Campobello di Mazara (Trapani) who acted as driver to the mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro in the last days of his life as a wanted man, for aiding and abetting and procured non-compliance with an aggravated sentence of 9 years.
Luppino, according to the prosecution, represented in the courtroom by the prosecutors of the DDA Piero Padova and Gianluca De Leo, also asked for money on behalf of the mafia boss and, together with his children, arrested last February, took care of transfers, removals and various organizational aspects of the godfather's fugitive nature of Castelvetrano.
In Luppino the Prosecutor's Office had initially charged him with the crime of aiding and abetting, but during the investigation the charge was changed to mafia association.
The accused was arrested together with Matteo Messina Denaro on 16 January 2023 outside the La Maddalena clinic, the health center where the boss had been undergoing chemotherapy for months and where he had undergone surgery.
