Nearly 52% of Venezuela's population lives in extreme poverty, with difficulty accessing housing, public services, social protection, work and education.
This is what emerges from the 2023 National Survey on Living Conditions (Encovi).
The report, published by the Social Research Institute of the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB), shows an increase in the rate in 2023 to 51.9% compared to 50.2% in 2022.
Furthermore, according to the study, 82.8% of Venezuelan families are in conditions of monetary poverty, meaning they do not have enough money to purchase the basic basket.
Essential services (water, electricity and sanitation) and health and nutritional problems are the dimensions in which the degree of social vulnerability is greatest, according to Encovi researcher Luis Pedro España.
After years of economic collapse and high inflation, which led seven million people to leave the country, there has been a slight recovery, but the number of poor has not decreased, despite the existence of some social income transfer programs and food distribution.
