Cuba is preparing to receive two containers of Colombian eggs in an unprecedented shipment agreed between the two countries at the latest Havana International Fair (Fihav): according to the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, the load contains 518,400 eggs.
The director general of the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA), Juan Fernando Roa Ortiz, said that Colombia has not been affected by avian influenza and Newcastle disease, which guarantees the conditions for the biosecurity of the poultry sector.
Egg production in Cuba has plummeted by 50%, authorities admitted last year, and poultry production on the Caribbean island is currently at 50% capacity.
These conditions are reflected in the diet and economy of Cubans, who have seen an increase in the prices of these products.
According to available data, last September the price of a carton of eggs had reached 3,000 pesos (114 euros) compared to a monthly minimum wage of 2,100 pesos (around 80 euros).
