In February 2024, 224 people were killed on the roads of mainland France.
Figures up 3% compared to the same month last year (217), Road Safety announced Thursday in a press release this Thursday.
The number of serious injuries (973) is “equivalent” to that of February 2023, according to estimates from the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), for this leap year 2024, counting one day more than in 2023 .
These road mortality figures, increasing in February 2024, contrast with the 3% decline observed for mainland France in 2023, compared to the previous year, according to provisional statistics.
An increase in the number of pedestrians killed
Road Safety notes “in particular” an increase in the number of pedestrians killed last month, 47 (+12 killed compared to February 2023).
But also an increase in the number of motorists who died (114, + 11 killed).
“The slight increase particularly concerns young people aged 18-24”, with 37 people killed in this age group (+ 6 killed), adds ONISR.
However, over the last 12 months, only the category of users of motorized personal travel devices (EDPm) - such as scooters - killed on the roads has increased, with 40 killed (+ 18%).
In February 2024, a user died while riding an EDPm.
On the motorized two-wheeler side, 32 people lost their lives and 13 cyclists were killed last month.

“With the arrival of spring, bicycles and motorized two-wheelers will be more numerous on our roads,” warns the interministerial delegate for road safety Florence Guillaume in the press release.
She recommends in particular to "check the condition of your motorized two-wheeler" and "thanks motorized users" to pay attention to the most vulnerable, in particular "to pedestrians who are in second place among the categories of users by mode of travel killed on our roads in February.”
Overseas, the toll is also increasing, with 249 injury accidents (+12% compared to February 2023) and 15 deaths (+15% compared to February 2023).
