World Sleep Day has been celebrated every year since 2008, on the Friday before the spring equinox, with the aim of promoting culture and awareness of the importance of sleep.
The day is promoted worldwide by the World Sleep Society and, in Italy, by the Italian Association of Sleep Medicine and is an internationally recognized event that creates connections and raises awareness of researchers, healthcare workers, patients and the public on sleep health .
In fact, it is estimated that over 45% of the world's population suffers from dyssomnia linked to lack of sleep or disturbed rest.
For World Sleep Day, the World Sleep Society has chosen to celebrate healthy sleep and the transformative power it can have on a person's life.
This year, World Sleep Day is dedicated, in particular, to the theme of Sleep Equity for global health: sleep is essential for health and everyone must have access to adequate sleep, regardless of location, socioeconomic status and environmental conditions.
Addressing sleep equity will reduce disparities and help improve human health and well-being around the world.
Organizing “healthy sleep,” which means more than just “sufficient sleep,” gives sleep health advocates more targeted messages that promote healthy behaviors.
According to the World Sleep Society there are six dimensions that influence sleep health and consequently general health and well-being:
Duration: how much sleep did you sleep in 24 hours?
Efficiency: How well can you fall asleep and stay asleep?
Timing: When do you sleep?
Regularity: do you have constant sleep and wake times?
Alertness: Can you maintain good concentration and attention during your waking hours?
Quality: do you feel satisfied with your sleep?
