With 42 votes against, 25 in favor and 4 abstentions, the Argentine Senate rejected the mega-decree of Javier Milei's government on the deregulation of the economy which will now be examined by the Chamber of Deputies.
To be definitively rejected, the decree must be rejected by both Houses of Parliament.
The leader of the Peronist group, Senator José Mayans, justified his side's vote by claiming "the unconstitutionality of the decree".
Generally speaking, the opposition, including the so-called dialogueist one, rejected the concept of a mega-decree of over 360 articles to be approved en bloc and invited the government to re-present some of the proposals contained in the decree whilst guaranteeing its availability to discuss them separately.
In case of defeat in the Chamber too, it would be the first time that a presidential decree has been rejected by Parliament since the return of democracy in 1983.
