At least 135 people died in the flood of the century in 2021, and hundreds of apartments were devastated and rendered uninhabitable.
The construction work is still continuing.
Many personal mementos were also lost in the flood, such as grandma's baking recipes.

She has been organizing this chat for a year, where countless women come over for a piece of home-baked cake and can exchange ideas.
On December 16th, Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe eV presented the recipe book.
It contains numerous recipes that seemed to have been lost in the flood.
We were very pleased to present the Ahrtal women's baking book to the public.
Thanks to the commitment of the seniors, the recipes of our homeland will be preserved for future generations.

Great success: Johanniter baking book sold out, reconstruction in the Ahr valley benefits
The book was made available for purchase for the first time at the event, with visitors having the opportunity to sample some of the home-baked delicacies featured in it.
The first edition of the baking book enjoyed such high demand that it is now completely sold out.
From the new year, the book will be available again at the Johanniter Dernau location for ten euros.
From February, the book can be ordered again by email to backbuch.ahrtal@johanniter.de.
After deduction of production costs, all proceeds from the sale of the book flow directly into reconstruction projects in the Ahr Valley, as stated on the Johanniter website.

From the flood to the bakery: Ahrtal women write baking books
The idea of creating a baking book for future generations in the Ahr Valley came about in collaboration with the Middle Rhine regional association of Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe.
This happened after recipe books and notes were lost on the night of the flood.
The only source for the cake recipes are now the bakers' memories.

More than 15 members of the Johanniter-Kaffeeklatsch have written down their favorite recipes from memory and collected other recipes.
They fill about 80 pages.
The variety of recipes is impressive: from classics such as crumble and apple cake to unusual creations such as the Ratz-Fatz cake or the ant cake from the tray.
Of course, the Ahrtal women's baking book also contains a recipe for a typical red wine cake from the Ahr region.
