- BRUSSELS - The new EU rules on the identification of the QR code for wine labeling make "explicit reference to the list of ingredients which must be titled or preceded by an appropriate entry consisting of or including the word 'ingredients'. However, no equivalent exists. in the EU Regulation for the provisions relating to the nutritional declaration".
EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski says this in a letter in response to the concerns raised by the Agriculture Committee of the European Chamber regarding the new rules that would have made already printed labels unusable.
"Regarding the possibility of replacing the term 'ingredients' with an abbreviation or symbol when the list of ingredients is provided electronically, my services have examined all the powers under Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013 and concluded that none of them allows the Commission to make such a change on the basis of existing powers. Let me highlight that the linguistic legislation applicable to this term is the same currently in force applied to the other indications, which will have to appear on the labels in one or more official forms in the languages of the Union", added Wojciechowski, responding to concerns regarding the need to translate the list of ingredients into different languages.
