Hundreds of specialties and subspecialties, various specialist centers throughout the country, cumbersome bureaucracy, rights that are not always accessible and the patient's lack of understanding of what is important and what is less cause the patient who needs complex medical treatments to feel lost more than once in the intricacies of the complex healthcare system.

This can occur after the patient is diagnosed as suffering from a chronic illness that requires a lot of attention to details from the different worlds of medicine and treatment.

Like for example a diabetic person who was injured in a car accident.

The need to treat the body's condition requires coordination between the therapists and the prioritization of the treatments.

If we continue with the example of that diabetic patient, he will now need treatments both in terms of the diabetes he suffers from and in terms of the injury he suffered, which will include, among other things, orthopedic consultation, physical therapy, occupational therapy and sometimes treatment of problems with other internal organs that were damaged as a result of the accident, at the same time as the exhaustion of rights For which he is entitled to receive from the National Insurance.

"In such a case, the same patient can reach a situation where he has to contact 10-14 different medical professionals, given the complexity of this medical condition, without a treatment manager to set priorities for treatment and coordinate between the therapists, he may find himself lost in this extensive system," says Prof. Orly Thorn. Head of the Department of Nursing at the Faculty of Health Professions at Ono Academic College.

According to her, "There are a lot of patients who need a professional to put them in order in the entire complex treatment process they have to go through, and this is where the function of the treatment manager comes into the picture, which is a qualified nurse who knows both the clinic and the medical problems and the various medical terms, and knows how to order and prioritize the treatment - what is needed to do immediately and what to do next, while helping patients coordinate between therapists and schedule appointments according to the level of clinical urgency.

In fact, the treatment management improves the system on three levels: the patients themselves receive more orderly and more efficient treatment, the nurses carry out the process in a structured and orderly manner based on advanced academic knowledge, and the medical system saves precious resources."

Does treatment management already exist in the world and in Israel?

"Definitely, it exists in the Western world and is especially common in the USA.

The health funds in Israel have long internalized this need and are gradually developing this professional function in a number of specific diseases such as diabetes or breast cancer, or in complex medical conditions.

The essential difference between us and the rest of the western countries is that the management of the treatment is carried out in Israel by nurses who did not study the role in an orderly manner in the academy.

This is also where the big problem lies, since the treatment management relies on a great deal of knowledge, theories and a broad familiarity with the system, which requires studying the subject at the master's degree level, as in the advanced countries of the world.

The new degree in nursing with a specialization in care management that will be opened at Ono Academic Kirya is a unique master's degree in nursing designed for qualified brothers and sisters that prepares them to specialize as care managers while providing tools and rich knowledge that will affect the quality and costs of care, at the individual and group level.

Does the degree combine theoretical and practical parts?

"Indeed. Part of the degree is theoretical by nature, but it also has a broad practical dimension that includes experience in the management of care in medical centers with the close supervision and guidance of expert supervisors in the health services. The degree also includes various simulations at the innovative simulation center at the Ono Academic Kirya. At the end of the practical experience, and after Meeting with patients, the students write a comprehensive treatment plan, which is also the final thesis of the degree. At the end of the degree, the graduates will have knowledge and understanding of all the components of treatment management, including an understanding of the health system in all its components, the ability to effectively prioritize needs and make appropriate referrals for clinical treatment, extraction Rights and concern for the social and mental part of the patient."

When will school start?

"The Tashfa school year will open on 3.11.24 and registration is in full swing."
