The 22nd edition of the Sol d'Oro competition is underway, a prestigious international blind tasting olive oil comparison which records a record number of participants, with 450 samples from Italy, Spain, Turkey, Croatia, Slovenia, Portugal, France, Greece, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
Judging the samples in strictly "blind" mode will be the panel of master tasters chaired by Marino Giorgetti and composed of international professional tasters: Giuseppe Giordano, Giulio Scatolini, Luigi Centauri, Simone De Nicola, Carlotta Pasetto, Fulvio Genovese, Antonio Volani, Roberta Ruggeri, probe Laroussi (Tunisia), Ernest Kante (Slovenia), Na Xie (China), Anunciacion Carpio (Spain), Milena Bukar Miklavcic (Slovenia), Miciyo Yamada (Japan).
There will be six categories included in the competition: Extra Virgin (Light, Medium and Intense Fruity), Monovarietal, Organic and Dop.
Italian and foreign extra virgin olive oils, products marketed by companies and mills that demonstrate that they produce a minimum quantity of 1,500 liters for each oil sent, are eligible to compete.
The "Absolute Beginners" category is dedicated to those who produce and market an extra virgin olive oil in a smaller quantity (from 500 to 1,499 litres).
The medal-winning oils and those awarded with Great Mention may bear the words "Concorso Internazionale Sol d'Oro Northern/Southern Hemisphere 2023" on the label with different colors and indications depending on the prize awarded (Sol d'Oro - Sol d'Argento - Bronze Sol - Great Mention).
There is also another innovation introduced with the 22nd edition of Sol d'Oro 2024, dedicated to extra virgin olive oils from the Northern Hemisphere: the new "Big Producers" section has also been foreseen, also dedicated to the oil industry, to bottling companies and all businesses that produce and bottle large quantities of Italian extra virgin olive oil.
