Reading aloud promotes bonding, not just between parents and children.

A Cornish writer has now written a book aimed specifically at dogs.

After a strenuous day and a few walks, many dog owners sink exhausted onto the sofa.

But not your four-legged friend.

British writer Erica Longdon has written a work specifically designed to read to dogs to calm them down or even put them to sleep.

But is that really possible?

The aim is to achieve this with the reading stories from the writer from Cornwall.

Erica Longdon “Bedtime Tales For Dogs”

In a report by the English broadcaster

ITV,

Erica Longdon makes herself comfortable on her sofa.

There are many pillows next to her that invite you to take a nap after reading.

A recent study found that reading aloud strengthens bonds with children.

This is particularly important because about a quarter of all elementary school students have difficulty reading.

But Longdon's guests are not elementary school children, but dogs.

She reads to them from her new book “Bedtime Tales For Dogs” or in German “Bedtime Stories for Dogs”.

The author has been holding reading sessions for dogs at a local café for several years.

“We take our dogs for granted.

We are always on our screens – even when we go for a walk.

I see people on the beach with their dogs who still don't engage," she tells the

Daily Mail

.

She emphasizes that dogs, just like people, need quiet time to themselves to feel loved.

Here, reading aloud offers the perfect opportunity to focus on the dog.

Erica Longdon noticed that her dogs always enjoyed listening to her read aloud.

As a singing bowl therapist, she has dealt intensively with noises, moods and sounds that have a calming and relaxing effect.

All of these experiences have been incorporated into “Bedtime Tales For Dogs”.

Reading dogs in Germany

In many places in primary schools in Germany there are reading sessions with a trained reading dog, as the

Reading Foundation

reports on its website.

Here, small reading units are presented to the reading dog individually or in small groups.

According to the Reading Foundation, particularly short texts have proven useful here in order to meet the attention span of first-time readers.

But comics are also suitable for increasing reading skills.

The Reading Foundation provides tips on how to get your own dog involved.
