Do cats prefer to be near men or women - or does it not matter at all?

What studies say about it.

Do you sometimes get the feeling that your cat might have a favorite when it comes to men and women?

After all, it is sometimes said that the little velvet paws are more likely to build a good connection with the female gender.

Others are of the opinion that men actually get preference here.

But what is true - or are they just myths?

Who do cats like better?

One factor apparently makes the difference

Scientists have also thought about who cats like better.

Professor Dennis C. Turner, founder and director of the Institute for Applied Ethology and Animal Psychology in Horgen, summarized the results of other studies and drew interesting conclusions from them in a publication in the online journal “Frontiers in Veterinary Science” in 2021.

According to this, cats do not seem to have any preferences in this regard - this is shown by a study in which the reactions of cats in various test scenarios were examined.

The deciding factor actually seems to be how the person treats the cat.

The four-legged friends react to the respective behavior of the person, regardless of whether it is a man or a woman.

Women are more likely to exhibit behavior that cats like

When it comes to behavior, women seem to get the hang of dealing with cats more often: the study observed that women are more likely to bend down towards the cat, get on their knees or get to eye level with it.

At the same time, women were also more inclined to talk to the cats, which is why they received a “response” more often.

All of this seems to be well received by the little four-legged friends and ensures that women are a little more popular.

The cats in the study also fared better when contact was not forced upon them.

While men were more likely to pick up the animals without warning, women waited until they got to them themselves.

And what is the conclusion from this?

In general, both sexes have equal chances of building a close relationship with their cat.

What seems to be more important is how you interact with her - a lot of communication, some freedom and the willingness to accommodate the furry friend during interactions can apparently ensure that a better relationship is built up.
