BARI - In Puglia the containment zone has been updated to contain Xylella and a targeted search for infected plants will be carried out to ensure rapid culling in the area involving the municipalities of Monopoli, Polignano a Mare, Castellana Grotte, Alberobello and part of Putignano .
This was announced by the Puglia Region.
This is the new definition of the containment area envisaged by the Phytosanitary Observatory of the Puglia Region, which takes into account the results of the monitoring implemented in these areas of the Apulian territory, subjected from July 2022 to strengthened surveillance of all surfaces covered by: olive trees, almond tree, cherry tree, scrub, forest and urban greenery.
"We are redefining the containment area envisaged by the action plan - explains the Councilor for Agriculture of the Puglia Region, Donato Pentassuglia - to allow a more effective and faster surgical operation to eradicate the plants affected by Xylella fastidiosa. containment measures referred to in articles 13 to 17 of EU Regulation 2020/1201 provide that only the infected tree is cut down and not the healthy plants within a radius of 50 meters from the infected plant. The containment strategy in the municipalities identified by the Observatory phytosanitary was shared with the scientific committee dedicated to the Xylella emergency, established ad hoc by the undersigned, and with the professional organizations".
A choice that "intends to protect the landscape of our Region - adds Pentassuglia - without forgetting that we are all called to take care of the territory which involves good agronomic practices such as ploughing, shredding and phytosanitary treatments".
