If you want to go on holiday in Italy, you have to be careful in the future.

A draft law envisages far-reaching changes – from cyclists to drivers.

Rome - Italy's government wants to fundamentally revise the road traffic regulations.

Since Wednesday, parliamentarians have been voting on numerous amendments to the text of the law.

If the draft is passed next Tuesday (March 19th), not only locals but also tourists will automatically face new rules in Italy.

New traffic rules are on the way in Italy – what exactly are planned?

“MIT drafted the new road rules by intervening in regulations that have been on hold for decades and introducing important innovations such as the alcohol ban and cracking down on drivers using cell phones or driving under the influence of drugs,” says a statement from MIT on the controversy surrounding the road traffic regulations in recent days, as reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.

The tightening of traffic regulations is not yet law.

If Parliament makes a final decision on Tuesday, the draft will go on to the Senate.

But what exactly is planned?

We have summarized the most important points:

  • Mobile phone behind the wheel: fine and driving license gone

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol: more stringent for repeat offenders

  • Driving under the influence of drugs: A positive test result means you will be banned for years

  • Wrong parking: higher penalties for pedestrians and cyclists

  • Stricter equipment when riding a scooter: helmet and insurance requirements

  • New rules for new drivers: No fast sports cars in the first few years

Compulsory helmet use, alcohol and cell phone driving: These are the most important changes planned in Italy

Cell phone while driving

: Anyone who uses their cell phone while driving in the future will not only have to pay a higher fine, but also temporarily lose their driver's license.

According to ANSA, the draft law specifically provides for a deprivation of 15 days to two months and a fine of up to 1,697 euros.

Anyone who is repeatedly distracted must pay up to 2,588 euros.

In addition, 8 to 10 points will be withdrawn from your driver's license.

Driving under the influence of alcohol:

The rule is stricter here, especially for people who have already been convicted of drunk driving.

Anyone who is stopped again with an alcohol level between 0.5 and 1.5 will have to adhere to a strict limit of 0 in the future.

In addition, the driver's license must be renewed with a new medical examination.

The fines in such cases increase by a third.

Finally, an alcohol barrier must be installed at the wheel at your own expense.

In other words: If you are stopped again during a traffic stop and alcohol is detected, you must show a lock that prevents the engine from starting.

Driving under the influence of drugs:

Until now, road users who were under the influence only had their driving license revoked and a three-year ban if the person was in a psychophysical state.

That should change.

The draft law provides for the consequence to be enforced even if the test result is positive.

Higher penalties for pedestrians and cyclists:

It's not just drivers who have to prepare for stricter rules.

The draft law provides for remote controls for pedestrians and cyclists in the future, for example to impose fines for illegal parking.

Anyone who books illegally in a parking bay for public transport, the police, fire brigade or another public service can therefore be prosecuted more easily.

Instead of people checking, devices are used that can record multiple violations at the same time.

In some cases, higher fines are also required: Unauthorized parking in disabled parking spaces will in future cost 990 euros instead of 330 euros.

Parking in bus lanes or stops should be increased from 165 to 660 euros.

Stricter equipment when riding a scooter:

Anyone who rides a scooter in Italy will in future be required to have a license plate, helmet, indicators, brake lights and insurance.

Anyone who drives without a number or insurance documents has to pay between 100 and 400 euros.

Anyone who does not have working indicators or brake lights will face a fine of between 200 and 800 euros.

New rules for new drivers:

novice drivers

You are not allowed to drive large-engined cars, such as fast sports cars, for the first three years after getting your driver's license.

However, according to the

Sky

news channel, the maximum power of the cars they can drive will be increased: for all M1 vehicles (i.e. vehicles used to transport people with a total mass of less than 3.5 t) it will increase from 70 to 105 kW as well as from 55 kW /t power/tare at 75 kW/t.

For many Germans, Italy is a popular travel destination, especially by car.

Anyone who decides to travel to a neighboring country should therefore know all the important traffic rules in Italy in order to avoid penalties.
