Highlights: Massive increase: ADAC statistics show the number 1 cause of breakdowns in electric cars. More than 43,000 hybrid cars were left behind in Germany in 2023, while the number of electric cars was over 30,000. Starter battery was the most common reason for a breakdown on German roads across all car types at 44.1 percent. In an earlier breakdown statistics, the ADAC compared combustion engines and electric cars with the same year of registration (2020) On average, electric vehicles had 4.9 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles in 2022, while combustion engines broke down 6.9 times.

Mobility should become more sustainable.

Electric cars play a big role in this.

But how do the electric cars perform in terms of reliability on German roads?

Munich – On average, ADAC breakdown assistants were called out every nine seconds last year.

In total, there were more than 3.5 million car breakdowns, as the current ADAC breakdown statistics show.

This corresponds to an increase of 3.4 percent compared to the previous year and is the highest value since 2019 - probably due to the increased traffic volume after the corona pandemic, according to the ADAC experts.

Compared to the previous year, electric cars broke down around twice as often.

There is a simple reason for this.

Twice as many electric car breakdowns as last year: This is the most common cause

The most common cause of breakdowns in electric cars was the starter battery.

More than half of all breakdowns were caused by this component.

In hybrid cars, the starter battery was responsible for 64 percent of breakdowns.

In total, more than 43,000 hybrid cars were left behind in Germany in 2023, while the number of electric cars was over 30,000.

This corresponds to almost doubling compared to the previous year.

One of the reasons: There are more and more electric cars on German roads.

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, over half a million electric cars were newly registered in 2023, accounting for 18.4 percent of all new cars.

This is a significant increase compared to the previous year.

“In addition, many electric cars from previous generations are now reaching an age where the susceptibility of combustion engines is also increasing,” the ADAC experts explain the background to the statistical increase in breakdowns.

Hybrid cars accounted for 29.5 percent of new registrations at 840,000.

Overall statistics: For these reasons, cars remain stranded on German roads

As in the previous year, the starter battery was the most common reason for a breakdown on German roads across all car types at 44.1 percent.

E-cars play a major role in the fight against climate change.

But can they also score points in terms of reliability?

In an earlier breakdown statistics, the ADAC compared combustion engines and electric cars with the same year of registration (2020).

The comparison showed: On average, electric vehicles had 4.9 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles in 2022, while combustion engines broke down 6.9 times.

One point for electric cars.

However, the annual distance driven could also have an influence on the result: electric cars have an average performance of 12,000 kilometers per year, combustion engines cover almost twice the distance and drive an average of 20,500 kilometers.
