The fatal thing about foot misalignments is that they usually remain undetected for a long time.

Treatments are then more difficult and the pain is usually greater.

Children's feet and their toes in particular are still very soft and flexible.

So it's no wonder that children rarely notice when their shoes are too small and may squash their little toe.

In children who wear shoes that are too small for years, the little toe eventually becomes permanently curved and can lead to constant irritation and friction in shoes, but also to further foot misalignments.

One example of many of how misalignments can develop unnoticed over the years.

By adulthood at the latest, pain and the need to relieve the pressure on one's feet arise.

Almost every foot is a little different from the norm.

This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

There is almost never a completely healthy, shapely foot.

In many cases, the body also compensates for minor misalignments so that pain is avoided for life.

According to the Health Information Service

, other misalignments

even grow out again over time: Children sometimes have a slightly bent foot that straightens out again during puberty.

The transverse and longitudinal arches are important for a healthy foot.

If there are problems at either level, this can lead to pain and health problems.

The most well-known foot deformities include:

  • Splayfoot (hallux valgus as a possible consequence)

  • Fallen arches/flat feet

  • Articulated foot

  • Hollow foot

In order to understand the impact of which misalignment, it helps to take a closer look at the clinical pictures.

Splayfoot and hallux valgus often follow one another

With splayfoot, the transverse arch of the foot is affected.

The metatarsals move apart, so that the front of the foot becomes slightly wider over time.

As a result, people put more strain on the middle bones in the front foot when rolling.

The foot usually signals that something is wrong with increased callus formation under the ball of the foot and pain in the front of the foot.

According to the

Society for Foot and Ankle Surgery,

a splayfoot can also result in hallux valgus.

The metatarsal bone bends outwards, which means that the thick toe leans towards the other toes.

The protruding metatarsal bone can rub against the shoe and cause pain.

At some point, the big toe can even completely cover the smaller one next to it, causing osteoarthritis in the foot.

Fallen arches/flat feet, arched feet and hollow feet

With this foot deformity, the longitudinal arch is the damaged area.

Over time, the longitudinal arch lowers further and further, so that almost the entire foot lies on the ground when standing.

An extremely pronounced form of arch arches is flat feet.

Incorrect shoes can also be the cause of this foot misalignment.

The phenomenon also occurs with weak foot muscles or joint inflammation.

In some cases, arch arches are also congenital.

In the case of a broken foot, the heel bends inwards.

This is not a cause for concern in children, but in adults this misalignment can lead to permanent problems.

People who are overweight or have knock knees are particularly often affected.

A hollow foot is the opposite of a fallen arch foot.

The arch of the foot is bent upwards so that affected people hardly put any strain on the sole when running or walking.

According to the Health Information Service

, consequences

often include claw toes or ankle injuries.

That is possible

If you have pain in your foot and suspect a foot misalignment, consult an orthopedist.

Specialists can give you a well-founded diagnosis.

Most misaligned feet can be treated well with specially made insoles.

If the pain is already severe, surgery is also possible.

If you want to do something preventative for the health of your feet, you can also integrate certain foot sports exercises into your everyday life.
