If your wallet containing important documents is lost, you should know which offices to contact first.

If your wallet is lost, in many cases this means not only the loss of cash, but also of bank cards and ID.

This makes it all the more important to act quickly.

1. Bank card gone?

How to get them banned quickly

If the bank card is lost or even stolen in this context, you should have it blocked immediately at the bank and, in the event of theft, report the loss to the police, advises the Hamburg consumer advice center.

Blocking the card by the credit institution prevents payment by entering a PIN.

There is also a central blocking number: “A call to the central blocking emergency number 116 116 prevents the card from being used in conjunction with the PIN,” reports the consumer advice center on its website.

This blocked operator can be reached directly around the clock, no separate registration is required and the call from within the country remains free of charge, according to the Hamburg consumer advice center.

“The emergency number means faster and better protection for you in the event of theft or loss of bank cards, cell phones and other electronic authorizations.”

The police also block KUNO and inform the retail central reporting office, so that electronic direct debit procedures with signatures are also excluded.

“Check your account movements regularly after you lose your Girocard, because not all retailers are integrated into the KUNO reporting system,” is another tip from the Hamburg Consumer Center.

“If money is debited, you can easily cancel the direct debit within six weeks.”

Annoying if the wallet is lost.

Those affected should react quickly.

2. Lost ID?

Go to the police first

Has your ID card been lost?

Then you should first go to the police and then immediately report the loss to the ID card authority at your place of residence, as the German Press Agency (dpa) reported on the subject.

The German embassy or a German consulate is the contact person abroad.

They issue a replacement document.

Anyone who has activated the online ID function (eID function) in their ID card should have it blocked immediately, the report also states.

This can be done again by calling 116 116, which is available around the clock, or by calling the relevant ID card authority at your place of residence.

3. Wallet gone?

Also check with the lost property office

In addition to the measures mentioned, one thing can also help: contact the lost and found office to find out whether the wallet has been handed in and start a corresponding search request.

A finder's fee could be due accordingly.

In cinemas, department stores or similar locations, lost items could also have been handed in directly on site.
