The Australian foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, and her partner of almost two decades, Sophie Allouache, were married yesterday in a vineyard near Adelaide, South Australia, in a ceremony which was also attended by the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, and several ministers of government.
The bridesmaids were the couple's two daughters, 12-year-old Alexandra and 8-year-old Hanna, of whom Allouache is the biological mother.
The ceremony was followed in the evening by a traditional "lion dance", in homage to the minister's Malaysian-Chinese origins.
Wong and Allouache, a public servant, met in 2007. Wong then became one of the strongest promoters of the legalization of same-sex marriage, which was achieved in Australia in 2017. Having entered parliament in 2002, Wong has been the longest-serving minister in office in Australia, having led the climate change and finance portfolios.
