The German Nutrition Society recommends no more than one egg per week.

Germans are eating more and more eggs.

Not just at Easter.

At the beginning of March, the German Nutrition Society (DGE) presented new food-related nutritional recommendations that should not only be healthy but also sustainable.

The new diet, which was also criticized for the lack of substitute products, consists of three quarters fruit, vegetables and legumes.

Instead, he gives meat, dairy products – and even eggs – less space.

Ideally, consumers should only eat one egg a week.

Oh yeah, a lot of people are probably thinking.

Just a few weeks before Easter, the DGE recommends reducing egg consumption.

Especially when colorfully painted Easter eggs are sold everywhere and far more than one egg will end up in the Easter basket.

Will the recommendations affect Easter egg consumption,

BuzzFeed News Germany

, a portal from IPPEN.MEDIA, asks Henner Schönecke, chairman of the Federal Egg Association.

Federal Association on DGE recommendation: Only one egg a week?

“This will have no impact on egg consumption at Easter,” says Schönecke.

"On the contrary.

More eggs are being eaten.” According to figures from the Federal Egg Association, each consumer ate an average of 236 eggs in 2023 – more than four times as many as the one egg per week that the DGE recommends.

In 2022 there were still 230 eggs.

“Consumers like to buy eggs because they are healthy, nutritious and, above all, cheap,” says the egg association chairman

“Especially at Easter, responsible consumers will not allow themselves to be banned from this healthy food.

Eggs at Easter are also a tradition for us.”

In any case, he suspects that the DGE has been guided more by environmental, animal welfare and sustainability aspects in its current recommendations (which we explain here).

Schönecke believes it is “not her job to do politics.

It’s their job to recommend healthy eating,” he says angrily.
