"I read the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein who says that it is a shame that half of Europe comes to Egypt to try to stop irregular immigration. I understand that it is shameful for them, but if I had wanted to implement the Democratic Party's program I would have run with the Democratic Party, instead I ran against the Democratic Party precisely because I don't agree with them."
Thus the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was asked on the sidelines of the signing of the EU-Egypt agreement.
"I think that it is instead a very important signal that Europe has understood that if it wants to seriously address the migration issue it must work on the external dimension, that Africa plays an absolutely strategic role in the current geopolitical context which has not been adequately realized in the past , that there are other actors who are moving and who are very effective, and that therefore it is important that we manage to maintain high our presence, our dialogue, our ability to have an impact, otherwise, as you know, in short, we will only lose ground which I repeat, in the current geopolitical context in which we find ourselves, it doesn't seem like a very intelligent choice to me."
