"President al-Sisi, dear colleagues, this is a historic meeting for relations between Egypt and the European Union: I am proud of the role played by Italy in achieving this objective. The global strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union fits into the current context in which We are facing many crises that could destabilize the Mediterranean region to an unimaginable level."
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this at the EU-Egypt summit underway in Cairo.
Among the "common challenges to face together" Meloni cites "food and water security, energy security, development and migration".
"This initiative - she added - demonstrates our willingness to strengthen and encourage a new structural method of cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean".
