Deutschlandradio listeners have to adapt.
The programs disappear from the cable network.
This has to do with money – and indirectly with the end of the additional cost privilege.
Hamm - Anyone who wants to listen to German public radio programs via cable in the future will be disappointed.
From the end of 2024, the broadcaster will stop distributing its three radio offerings via the cable networks (DVB-C).
This is also due to the abolition of the additional cost privilege.
Station: Deutschlandradio
Programs: Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandfunk Kultur and Deutschlandfunk Nova
Deutschlandradio: Programs disappear from the cable network
Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandfunk Kultur and Deutschlandfunk Nova will of course continue to broadcast and be receivable after their cable shutdown, for example via satellite or as an Internet live stream.
“With IP streaming and DAB+, Deutschlandradio offers its audience good alternatives to cable reception,” said a spokesman for Deutschlandradio.
The money that had to be used to feed cable reception – around 1.6 million euros for the years 2021 to 2024 – will now be used to strengthen “non-linear offers” such as the Dlf Audiothek app.
From January 2025 ,
the three Deutschlandradio programs would be the only public radio programs that will no longer be broadcast on cable networks, reports
wa.de.
The radio station risks losing listeners by disappearing from the cable networks, but according to a spokesman, this will not be too high.
“According to our assessment, cable reception for radio programs only accounts for a very small proportion of overall usage,” he told the
German Press Agency
, confirming a report by the web portal
Cablevision.
Deutschlandradio: Saying goodbye to the cable network saves a lot of money
With the abolition of the so-called additional cost privilege, a further decline in cable usage is expected, Deutschlandradio explained the motives.
For this reason, cable distribution is no longer economical for a media company specializing in audio.
Landlords were previously allowed to pass on the costs of a broadband cable connection to their tenants - from July this will no longer be permitted.
Millions of tenants are threatened with a black screen.

In the current report by the Commission for determining the financial needs of broadcasters (KEF) there is also the passage: “The distribution of Deutschlandradio programs via cable networks (DVB-C) will be discontinued.
This means that no more costs for cable distribution will be registered for the coming contribution period 2025 to 2028.” Speaking of broadcasting and money: In North Rhine-Westphalia, the first cities have no longer collected the broadcasting contribution since 2024.
