“We are very concerned about the risks that a large-scale offensive in Rafah could have on the vulnerable civilian population. This must be avoided at all costs. I would also like to thank Egypt for the extraordinary efforts made to ensure that humanitarian supplies can reach Gaza.”
The president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said this at a press conference in Cairo.
"Gaza risks famine. It is unacceptable. It is essential to quickly reach an agreement for a ceasefire quickly, which frees the hostages and allows for more humanitarian aid," she said.
"The EU - he adds - is doing everything possible to provide the necessary assistance. Today Gaza needs 500 trucks a day - or the equivalent by land, air and sea. This year alone the EU will provide 275 million euros of assistance to the Palestinians. We have delivered over 1,800 tons of aid, including medical equipment to Egypt and we are ensuring that this aid can reach Gaza through all possible routes."
