For many people, seasonal asparagus is a regular part of the menu in spring.
What you should consider when it comes to stick vegetables.
The asparagus season actually doesn’t start until mid-April.
Depending on the temperatures of the previous winter months and the existing soil conditions, the season may start early at the end of March.
Traditionally, the season ends with the so-called “Asparagus New Year’s Eve” on June 24th.
In the meantime, you can conjure up numerous delicious dishes using the healthy vegetables.
Early start to the season: tips for buying asparagus
When it comes to buying asparagus, as with most fruits and vegetables, the freshness of the product plays a fundamental role.
Whether in the supermarket or at the fresh market – pay particular attention to the origin of the vegetables.
The more regionally the asparagus was grown and harvested, the shorter the subsequent journey into your shopping cart.
So you basically have a good chance of getting fresh asparagus spears.
When purchasing, you should pay attention to the freshness of the asparagus spears.

If you are still unsure about the freshness, you can quickly test some of the freshness characteristics of the vegetables.
The asparagus tips should still be closed when purchased.
When fresh, the poles are relatively strong and difficult to bend.
When you carefully scratch the rods with your fingernail, the affected areas remain slightly moist.
And the ends of the rods should not appear discolored or dried out either.
According to the BR
, it is also
a good sign if the rods squeak slightly when rubbed together.
The smell of fresh asparagus paired with earthy undertones should also be present when sniffing the vegetables.
If the stalks already smell slightly sour, they are probably no longer very fresh.

Sensible storage – this is how asparagus stays fresh for a long time
After purchasing, the vegetables should of course stay fresh for a long time if they are not processed immediately.
The best way to do this is to place the fresh asparagus spears wrapped in a damp kitchen towel in the vegetable compartment of your refrigerator.
But even if the asparagus does not wilt so quickly, it is advisable to process the vegetables on the day of purchase if possible.

If the asparagus has been forgotten in the refrigerator and now seems a bit limp, you should place the unpeeled spears in cold water for about two hours before preparing them.
According to
Stern.de,
the vegetables become crispy again and are easier to peel.
If you want to enjoy the vegetables for a little longer, you can alternatively store them in the freezer for around six months.
The raw asparagus simply needs to be peeled and frozen at minus 18 degrees, the
