Can banana bread really be low carb?

Not quite.

Nevertheless, with this recipe you can save some carbohydrates without having to forego the delicious, juicy taste of banana bread.

Why this is particularly interesting for athletes.

Anyone who wants to limit their carbohydrate consumption due to a specific fitness goal or health reasons is often looking for low-carb alternatives to classic recipes.

Once this is found, disillusionment usually follows after preparation and taste testing.

Because without sugar, flour and other carbohydrates, dishes usually have nothing to do with the delicious taste of the original.

Not so with our recipe for low-carb banana bread – you can find the free PDF for downloading below in this article.

The ingredients for low-carb banana bread

  • ripe bananas

  • Eggs

  • almond flour

  • baking powder

  • Cinnamon

  • Salt

  • Walnuts

When you talk about low carb banana bread, you should of course compare it to the original recipe with white flour and added sugar.

The banana itself contains some carbohydrates (20 grams per 100 grams), mainly in the form of natural sugars such as sucrose, glucose, fructose and starch.

The total sugar content of a raw banana is around 17.27 grams per 100 grams (source: DEBInet).

The exact proportion depends on the degree of ripeness of the banana - ripe bananas contain more pure sugar than less ripe ones.

The almond flour contained in the low-carb banana bread recipe has around 11 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams - a very low proportion compared to classic wheat flour (72 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams).

Although the spice cinnamon is a carbohydrate-containing food per se, it is only used in very small quantities and is therefore negligible in the carbs calculation.

In addition to a lot of water, a raw egg contains a lot of proteins (12 grams) and very few carbohydrates (1.5 grams).

The walnut shines above all with valuable fats (70 grams), protein (16 grams) and also contains only small amounts of carbohydrates (6 grams).
