Cash still remains widely used in the euro area despite the sharp decline in recent years, so much so that almost six out of ten transactions are made with cash.

This is what emerges from the preview of the ECB's economic bulletin on the topic 'Why cash remains important for so many' which specifies that the percentage of transactions in points of sale conducted in cash, which went from 79% in 2016 and to 72% in 2019, however remains at 59% in 2022.

This figure, however, the central bank study highlights, masks the existence of mixed users, with up to 74% of people making at least one cash transaction on a given day in 2022, which highlights the continued importance of cash alongside digital payment options.

And cash is used not only by those without a payment card or bank account, but also by a variety of other people.

In light of this evidence, explains the central bank, the Eurosystem's commitment to ensuring that everyone has access to cash, despite the digitalisation of payments, is confirmed.
