A thrombosis occurs when blood clots in the vessel and can lead to serious consequences such as a heart attack or pulmonary embolism.

There are ways to prevent a blood clot.

Venous thrombosis can ultimately occur in various places in the body, such as the legs, arms, shoulder girdle, pelvis or even the brain.

The cause is a blood clot that blocks a blood vessel.

If part of the thrombus then breaks off, it can travel through the bloodstream to the heart or lungs and cause a heart attack or a life-threatening pulmonary embolism.

There are risk factors in everyday life that can promote thrombosis - some of which you can reduce or eliminate completely by changing your lifestyle.

Certain risk factors for thrombosis, such as older age, a congenital blood clotting disorder or even cancer, cannot be influenced - but certain habits in everyday life can, so that blood clots do not form in the veins, as the

To ensure that the blood does not clot unexpectedly in the body where this is not intended and the vessel could be partially or completely blocked in the form of a thrombosis, doctors advise:

  • Drink enough:

It is recommended to drink at least two liters of liquid – preferably water – every day.

  • Sufficient exercise:

Endurance sports such as swimming, cycling, trail running, jogging or hiking or even dancing activate the muscles, which supports blood flow in the leg veins.

Walking quickly can also improve blood circulation in the legs.

  • Avoid sitting and standing for long periods of time:

For example, if you sit a lot because of your job, you should always incorporate foot exercises into your everyday working life or take regular breaks to get up and, if possible, keep your feet elevated.

  • Avoid or reduce excess weight

: a study shows that the risk of thrombosis increases with higher weight and body mass index (BMI).

  • Avoid or stop smoking

: Nicotine constricts blood vessels, increasing the risk of blood clots and thrombosis.

  • Do not constrict veins:

Crossing or bending your legs for long periods of time is not optimal for proper blood circulation and can promote blood clot formation.

Stockings or supportive pants and supportive underwear that are too tight can also constrict the veins.

  • Stop taking the contraceptive pill or switch to other options

: The contraceptive affects the substances in the blood that promote clotting, so the risk of thrombosis is greater in the long term.
