Laura Fiorito, 43, from Syracuse, is one of the two victims of the shooting, reported by the local press, which took place in Belmoplan, Belize, last Tuesday.
The family resided in Holland and was on vacation in the Central American country.
A film from a local broadcaster reconstructs what happened at the city's central market where Laura Fiorito had gone with her husband Salvatore Lopes and their children aged 7 and 11.
From the video we can see that while the Syracusan family was eating an ice cream, they were approached by an American-Haitian, owner of a resort, who after greeting them pulled out a gun and fired a few shots at Salvo Lopes, missing him, and then chased Laura Fiorito, fatally hitting her.
He also victimized a seven-year-old girl who was with them.
The man was immediately arrested by the local police.
"She will live in our hearts forever. She was the best a man could wish for and the best mother in the world", writes her husband Salvatore on social media.
“You have brought joy and happiness to so many people. There are no tears that can stop the pain we feel. We have been married for over 20 years and have created so many beautiful memories. You gave me two beautiful children, a gift from the gods. (..) We miss you so much. The thought that we can no longer hold you in our arms is an indescribable pain", his heartbreaking words.
For the repatriation of the body to Italy, Dutch friends of Laura and Salvo have started an online fundraiser to help the family cover the huge expenses.
"On behalf of myself and the entire Syracusan community, we express our sorrow for the killing of our fellow citizen Laura Fiorito in Belize, especially if the hypothesis of a crime committed by a deranged person immediately arrested is confirmed. The municipal administration is ready to do its part if they arrive of the requests from the family members. I hope that the investigators will shed full light on the facts" said the mayor of Siracusa, Francesco Italia.
