In order to support families financially, the state pays monthly child benefit.
How long this is the case depends on various factors.
For many people, children are the most important thing in the world.
In addition to all the emotional benefits, the financial aspect should also be taken into account when planning a family - after all, children also cost money.
An important source of finance for parents is therefore child benefit, which is paid regardless of income and will be replaced by basic child benefit from 2025.
Since January 1, 2023, the family fund has been paying a uniform amount of 250 euros per month per child.
Foreign citizens can also receive child benefit
According to
Finanztip.de,
the German state paid around 48 billion euros in child benefit in 2022 - for more than 17 million children.
If the parents have German citizenship and live in Germany, they receive child benefit every month.
This also applies to foreign citizens as long as they come from an EU country or Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
The same applies to British citizens who were already resident in Germany before December 31, 2020 and continue to live here.
Parents who have fled Ukraine, as well as refugees and those entitled to asylum who are generally recognized, also receive child benefit.

But how long do parents receive child benefit, which can be applied for
immediately after the birth from the
Federal Employment Agency's family fund?
The state transfers child benefit monthly until the month in which the young person celebrates their 18th birthday.
A few months beforehand, the family fund sends out a new application form by post, which can also be found on the Federal Employment Agency's website.
If the young adult is still attending school, completing training, looking for a training position or doing voluntary service, money will continue to flow from the state even after their 18th birthday.

With one exception: payment of child benefit ends on your 25th birthday
There are various constellations in which the state continues to pay child benefit even after the child turns 18.
However, beyond the 25th birthday, the special payments are only transferred by the state if the people affected have a disability that prevents them from financing themselves.
Parents receive child benefit up to their 21st birthday if their child is registered as unemployed and looking for work.

Child benefit flows until the child's 25th birthday if certain conditions are met, explains the
Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
The state provides child benefit until the child's 25th birthday if:
does not hold a training position and therefore cannot begin or continue vocational training
completed training
carries out a recognized voluntary service
is in a transition period of no more than four months between graduation and the start of training or voluntary service
If parents separate, the person with whom the child predominantly lives receives child benefit.
But even if the child lives with mother and father for approximately the same amount of time, only one parent receives child benefit.
It matters which parent the child is registered with.
