"It is a wonderful response from the city for the city, it is a response to those who think of using the city for their electoral campaign and above all it is a response to those who say that Bari is under blackmail by the mafia".
The mayor of Bari, Antonio Decaro, said this upon his arrival at the 'Hands off Bari' demonstration. "This city - he added - no longer allows itself to be blackmailed by anyone, neither by the mafia nor by politicians because in the last 20 years the city, with daily, tiring work, she has become better every day. She has gotten back on her feet, she has grown, she has recovered her dignity, today she is proud to be what she has become."
Decaro explained that "we people from Bari are no longer ashamed, we are people from Bari and we are proud to be so. Today we all feel a bit like people from Bari, even the citizens and mayors who come from outside".
