Former England selector Sven Goran Eriksson, who suffers from advanced cancer, realized what he had called his dream: he coached Liverpool for a charity match, at the Anfield Road stadium filled with red scarves from the fans of the Reds.
The 76-year-old Swede entered the pitch with a smile as the club anthem "You Will Never Alone" was sung from the stands before kick-off.
Eriksson then took his place on the bench, alongside former players Ian Rush, John Barnes and John Aldridge, to lead a team of Liverpool legends including Jerzy Dudek, Martin Skrtel, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, against a selection of former Liverpool players 'Ajax.
"It's like a dream - Eriksson commented yesterday in the pre-match conference -. When I was active, I always dreamed of coaching Liverpool, but it never happened. I was close to it once, several years ago, there were but it never happened,” he said.
Eriksson revealed in January that he had "at most a year" left to live after his pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
At the time he evoked his unconditional love for Liverpool before expressing his regret at not being able to coach him.
The club did not remain insensitive to the will of the former English manager and offered to lead a team of former glories in a meeting for the foundation of Liverpool.
