The Dutchman found the square of his Red Bull in the most important moment of qualifying, after having been in difficulty in the previous sessions, preceded by Sainz and Perez in Q1 and by both Ferraris in Q2.
Lewis Hamilton was the biggest disappointment on Saturday. The multiple world champion - eight poles in his career in Australia - was unable to get his Mercedes into Q3 and will only start 11th.
