Because there are situations that can cross the "embarrassment" threshold and ultimately require a step back, if only for political expediency.
In the prime minister's party there is a silence that is rather noisy.
The only voice that is raised in the centre-right in defense of the head of Tourism is that of the deputy prime minister and secretary of FI Antonio Tajani, always "guaranteeing" whether it is the municipality of "Bari", at risk of dissolution due to the mafia, or Daniela Santanchè : "a person is innocent until he is convicted in the third instance" says the Foreign Minister.
But it's the only one, at least until dinner time.
As soon as the news begins to circulate that the Fdi minister is under investigation for fraud on Covid funds (20,000 hours of unemployment benefits requested and obtained for employees who in reality continued to work, the accusation) the attack from the opposition they ask for his resignation.
The Fdi itself, which "was making a loud statement about the management of the pandemic, closes its eyes", after Santanché already "lied in Parliament? Shame", attacks the M5S leader Giuseppe Conte.
While Elly Schelin relies on irony: "I would have liked to see Meloni's faces", she says directly to the prime minister, when from Brussels "she will have received the news that a minister of her government is under investigation for aggravated fraud against the State", she says the Dem secretary, recalling however that "ministers have resigned for less serious accusations than these, in Italy and in Europe".
Conte and Schlein also signed the motion of no confidence in Salvini initially presented by Matteo Richetti of Azione (who, like Iv, does not immediately comment on the new Santanchè case), which is on the Chamber calendar for next week.
"I would advise Meloni to pay more attention to the ministers accused of having defrauded the State" rather than "smearing mayors like Decaro", also says the leader of the Italian Left Nicola Fratoianni, while Riccardo Magi of +Europa, while claiming guaranteeism, underlines how a farewell from the minister would allow her "to defend herself better in the trial" but also not to "create embarrassment in the institutions" already transformed "into a joke" due to her "obvious political inability".
At the time, last summer, Meloni had clarified on the one hand that a notice of guarantee is not enough to make a minister resign, on the other he had underlined that the "complex" affair was "extrapolitical" because it did not concern his activity as a minister.
And of course, once again we will have to "see better", says a senior leader of his party, what it is about.
But then Santanchè herself admits that after the GUP's decision she will make a "serious and conscious evaluation in the political arena", out of "respect for the government and the party".
Words that are read in political circles also as the possibility of a reflection on the step backwards.
