"On the 150th anniversary of his birth, the Republic remembers Luigi Einaudi, the first Head of State elected with the rules of the '48 Constitution, one of the most important builders of our democracy, a figure of high international prestige who helped Italy in the post-war period to regain the dignity lost with fascism.
The debt that the national community owes to this father of the country is great and the heritage of thought, political action, institutional balance and personal coherence that he has left us is rich". Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a declaration.
"An economist of vast culture - we read again - sensitive to the issues of social equity, an authentic democrat who was not afraid to sign Benedetto Croce's Manifesto of non-fascist intellectuals in 1925, Luigi Einaudi dedicated himself with intelligence and passion to the reconstruction of the country and then, as President of the Republic, he explained his commitment to weaving the fabric of the new Italian democracy. Constituent, Minister and Vice President of the Council, Governor of the Bank of Italy, Einaudi left his mark with sobriety and measure, great determination and faith in freedom, helping to grow consensus on those values that have allowed Italy to rise from the rubble of war and dictatorship.
Einaudi's convinced Europeanism stands out as another clear testimony to his ability to vision the future.
All this makes his teaching precious and vital."
