Reddit community helps: Savings tips for trainees on a tight budget
With the statement “I am a trainee and unfortunately I hardly have any money left over the month.
Where is the cheapest?” the young woman addresses users in a Reddit forum.
With only 20 euros she has to buy groceries this month and asks for advice: “I’m open to all tips, including recipes, etc.”
Within a few hours, over 100 comments were collected on her now deleted post (as of March 19, 2024).
Many users share simple recipe ideas that consist of a few inexpensive ingredients such as potatoes, rice or pasta.
They write detailed instructions for the trainees.
One user writes: “Get a sack of potatoes, a net of onions and a bottle of oil.
Versatile food and can be combined with more unusual ingredients from the leftovers in the pantry in emergencies.
Another tip comes from a user who points out inexpensive offers at discounters like Lidl: “In addition to all the great recipes and recommendations, I would also recommend rescue bags from 'Too Good To Go', for example, as long as you're not picky.
You can get goods from the day before or, at many bakeries, what was left over that day for about a third of the normal price.” With the rescue bags you can not only save money, but also keep food out of the trash can.
How much do trainees earn?
The training allowance for many trainees is set in collective agreements.
Where no collective agreement applies, the minimum training allowance fought for by the unions applies.
In 2023, in the first year of training, it will be 80 percent of the industry standard remuneration, but at least 620 euros.
This also applies to trainees in state-funded external training.
