Finally spring and the colorful early bloomers are sprouting from the ground everywhere.

Daffodils (daffodils) are particularly popular with their bright yellow flowers, but what is the best way to care for them in a pot?

First, let's clarify the question of the name: Are the beautiful yellow flowers called daffodils or daffodils?

The answer: All daffodils are daffodils, but not all daffodils are daffodils.

Narcissus is the botanical generic term, daffodils are (probably) the best-known subspecies.

The popular early bloomers are now available in pots in supermarkets and garden centers.

You can find out how best to care for daffodils in pots here:

How long do daffodils last in the apartment?

Daffodils can bloom in pots in the apartment for one to two weeks and bring spring into the house.

To do this, they should, if possible, be in a cool, bright place at around 10 to 17 degrees Celsius, because too much heat (for example on the radiator) is not good for them.

They then sprout too quickly from their roots and soon wilt.

If you keep daffodils in pots, you should not give them too much water and definitely avoid waterlogging.

The small-flowered variety of daffodil, “Tête à Tête”, is particularly popular as a houseplant.

When watering, it is best to use a watering can with a small opening so that the water can gently penetrate the soil.

The same applies here: the cooler the location, the longer the blooming time of the beautiful yellow flowers is.

Can daffodils stay in a pot?

To overwinter, you should move your daffodils outside to a cool place.

A frost-proof container with drainage holes is suitable for this, because onions or tubers don't like waterlogging.

To do this, only the faded flowers and the stem are removed.

It is important to keep the leaves on the bulb until they are yellow and dry, as they provide the bulb with nutrients for the next flowering.

The soil can also remain in the pot until next spring.

If the daffodils are well rooted, they will get through the winter well in the ground because their storage organs are hardy and can also tolerate frost quite well.

Overwintering is just as possible in a pot as in the ground.

Important: Here too, the onions must not be too warm, otherwise they will germinate too early.

What do you do with daffodils when they've finished blooming?

When daffodils have faded, their bulbs do not die, but rather prepare for the next bloom and draw nutrients from their leaves, causing them to yellow.

It is better not to cut your daffodil at this stage.

Regular cleaning, i.e. removing faded buds, helps to prepare them for the next growth, so you can enjoy the beautiful yellow flowers again next spring.

Instead of leaving the daffodil bulbs in the pot, you can of course also dig them up completely and store them in a dark, cool (9°C - 20°C) and dry place.

The basement or garage, for example, are ideal for this.
