March marks the beginning of the sowing season for many vegetables in the garden.
Different types of plants can be sown taking local weather conditions into account.

March brings with it the first signs of spring, so the first gardening tasks begin and the season for sowing seeds begins.
For some plant varieties, March is the ideal time to get them in the ground and hope for healthy growth.
Sow seeds in March
These early vegetables include:
leafy vegetables such as chard, spinach and lettuce,
Brassica vegetables such as cauliflower
Bulbous vegetables such as shallots and pearl onions
Turnips, turnip stalks and carrots
Garlic (best at the end of March, together with leek)
Green beans and broad beans
Field peas (more like mid to late March)
Asparagus peas
Lamb's lettuce
However, before you start sowing, it is important to consider the weather conditions in your region.
Ask yourself: What is the climate like in my area?
Are harsh winters with sub-zero temperatures and snow common or do winters tend to have mild temperatures?
Depending on the weather in your region, the chances of a successful harvest may vary.
If March is still characterized by frosty nights in your region, it is advisable to prefer more delicate vegetables in the cold frame.
An unexpected frost can quickly endanger the harvest at this time of year.
It is therefore important to ensure adequate protection.
After you have sown your seeds, you can cover the beds with fleece to protect them from frost.
For seeds that require a warmer temperature to germinate, perforated foil can provide additional heat from sunlight during the day.

Protect plants from freezing
If the weather in March is already largely mild and only occasionally affected by frost, you can sow your seeds directly outdoors.
However, it is advisable to protect the plants on nights with near-freezing or sub-zero temperatures to ensure their survival.
Special helpers for winter protection such as plant protection hoods or early harvest hoods can be helpful.
