Vegan butter is on everyone's lips.
But how good does it taste to the experts at Öko-Test in issue 4/2024?
Not particularly – almost all of them fail:
Vegan substitute products have arrived in the mainstream of society and are becoming increasingly popular.
But are they getting better and better?
This certainly applies to many products - but currently probably not to vegan butter.
Öko-Test took a closer look at the spreadable fat for bread (more test reports can be found here).
With rancid results.
Almost all of the products tested fail the test.
Are there any other brands you can eat?
Vegan butter completely fails the Öko-Test
According to the Öko-Test?
No.
The testers cannot recommend any of the brands tested and advise choosing the best margarine.
The biggest problems with vegan butter?
Harmful mineral oil components (MOAH and MOSH) and unhealthy fats - but fewer healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
The lack of transparency of many manufacturers in their supply chains seems particularly paradoxical.
After all, many customers are currently switching to vegan alternatives in order to receive a more sustainable and ethical product.
All tested vegan blocks contain tropical oils such as coconut oil - which makes the conditions under which the cultivation takes place all the more important.
Meggle and The Vegan Cow, for example, do not respond to inquiries from Öko-Test.
HEIDELBERG24 shows the absolute losers of vegan butter:
Violife Vioblock: (Upfield/Arivia) – Grade: “unsatisfactory” (corresponds to school grade 6)
Meggle The Vegan – Grade: “unsatisfactory”
Edeka My Veggie No B:)tter – grade: “unsatisfactory”
Test winner?
None - but this vegan butter doesn't fail
There are no test winners at Öko-Test this time.
At least two brands can boast of not failing, unlike the others.
Is that a reason to celebrate?
Oh well.
The complete test report on vegan butter can be viewed for a fee at Öko-Test.
Small consolation: Many of the vegan butter blocks taste “very good” - some without added flavors, such as the block from Landkrone.
The other test results still leave a rather bitter taste.
These are the only two brands that barely pass the test:
Land Krone Organic Vegan Block (Landkrone) – grade: “sufficient” (corresponds to school grade 4)
Naturli' Vegan Block (Naturli Foods) – grade: “sufficient”

It's not just vegan butter that has these problems
On the other hand, of course, there is always the original, which is copied here: According to Öko-Test, butter made from cow's milk is in no way inferior to this test result.
In the last eco-test for butter, some brands also failed - and in the end the vegan version is still superior to the original in terms of carbon footprint.
