Eggs in the eco-test – popular discounters deliver depressing results

2024-03-25T11:24:56.467Z

Highlights: Eggs in the eco-test – popular discounters deliver depressing results. If you're looking for "very good" ones, you should go for organic. No harmful substances or germs were detected in significant quantities. No insecticide or pesticide residues, permanent chemicals or salmonella - so the organic test report should not have a negative impact on how healthy eggs are for daily consumption. The Öko-Test test winners show that discounter products can also keep up well here.

Öko-Test tests eggs in issue 4/2024 and finds: Popular discounters do poorly.

Quality and animal welfare are often neglected:

Eggs are one of Germans' favorite breakfast foods.

Do they deserve this reputation or should the breakfast egg give us more stomach ache?

Öko-Test examined numerous organic and free-range eggs and came to a clear, albeit sobering, result (you can find further test reports here).

These discounter eggs fail Öko-Test

Organic is better, according to the results of Öko-Test.

This is not only reflected in good results for the respective brands, but unfortunately also in depressing results for popular discounters.

Netto and Aldi in particular have a negative impact here.

It wasn't just the quality of the eggs themselves that left something to be desired for the testers: contamination on the outside, damage and cracks on the egg and bleeding on the inside.

The discounters perform particularly poorly when it comes to animal welfare.

This affects the small space in which many of the chickens are kept and the handling of male chicks.

They have no longer been allowed to be shredded since 2022.

In practice, this often means separation from other chicks, fattening for several weeks and then slaughter.

HEIDELBERG24 shows the rotten eggs from the Öko-Test:

  • Landfreude Fresh free-range eggs 10 pieces (Aldi) – grade: “poor”

  • From the country Fresh eggs from free range farming 10 pieces (net) – grade: “sufficient”

  • Rewe Best Choice 10 fresh white free-range eggs – grade: “satisfactory”

Which eggs do well in Öko-Test?

The downside: There are also good test results - if you're looking for "very good" ones, you should go for organic.

While the quality of the test winners from free-range farming significantly exceeds that of other brands, animal welfare often still falls behind.

By the way, you can find the complete test report from Öko-Test on eggs here for a fee.

However, the organic eggs impressed the testers on all fronts.

Also good news for all eggs: no harmful substances or germs were detected in significant quantities.

This means: no insecticide or pesticide residues, permanent chemicals or salmonella - so the organic test report should not have a negative impact on how healthy eggs are for daily consumption.

The Öko-Test test winners show that discounter products can also keep up well here:

  • A well-rounded affair 6 organic eggs, Naturland (model poultry farm L. Häde) – grade: “very good”

  • Alnatura 10 organic eggs, Bioland – grade: “very good”

  • K-Bio 6 fresh eggs, Bioland (Kaufland Biovum) – grade: “very good”

Aldi fails the Öko-Test – but changes suppliers

As Öko-Test emphasizes, Aldi was also unable to provide complete evidence of the egg supply chain.

However, the discounter claims to have changed suppliers in the meantime.

It remains to be seen whether the test result will trigger a change among other grocers.

So much for the responsibility of retailers.

But what happens to the eggs after you buy them?

Here we explain how to store them correctly and exactly how long eggs last.
