The British government has announced the adoption of sanctions against a hacker group believed to be controlled by the Chinese state, APT31, and against two Chinese citizens in response to the cyber attack attributed to Beijing against the Electoral Commission.
The Foreign Office reports this in a note signed by the Foreign Minister, David Cameron, the Interior Minister, James Cleverly, and by the deputy prime minister Oliver Dowden, responsible for coordinating the checks on the incident following the revelations of recent months.
Dowden himself spoke in the House of Commons about "malign" attacks and a "real" threat to national security and the democratic institutions of the Kingdom.
