Even if Easter preparation needs to be done quickly, colorful eggs from the supermarket are often not a good idea.

What you should know.

They are spotted or spotted, red or blue - children love them and even grandma likes to have them: Easter eggs are certainly the most popular Easter tradition and without them the festival would be unthinkable.

To make things as uncomplicated as possible, many people use ready-dyed eggs from the supermarket.

However, if you value the welfare of the animals, you should stay away from it.

When it comes to health, there could also be unpleasant surprises lurking with purchased, dyed eggs.

Boiled eggs from the supermarket: beware of germs!

When it comes to fresh eggs, there are strict rules about how long they can stay on the shelf in the supermarket: markets can offer them for a maximum of 21 days.

However, things are different with boiled eggs.

These regulations do not apply here and the manufacturers themselves decide how long the eggs last.

The limits are often pushed to the limit.

The eggs may be left unrefrigerated on the supermarket shelf for a long time.

Better not: Why you should avoid dyed eggs from the supermarket.

Loose eggs at the bakery or on the market often have no best-before date.

The sales staff often don't know how old the goods are.

It is particularly risky if the eggshell has small cracks.

Germs can penetrate here and spoil the egg, writes the

.

Further tests showed that a good third of the samples were contaminated with germs, as

NDR

reports.

Every 30th egg was even considered inedible.

It has to be quick and the eggs from the supermarket are indispensable?

You should pay attention to this:

  • If possible, do not buy loose eggs without a best-before date.

  • The best-before date for supermarket eggs should be as far in the future as possible.

This suggests that the goods are still fresh.

  • It is better not to eat eggs with cracks in the shell.

  • Do the eggs smell sweet, sour or sulphurous?

    Away with it!

The origin of colored eggs from the supermarket is often uncertain

If you rely on organic quality or at least free-range eggs when it comes to fresh eggs, it is better to avoid ready-made Easter eggs.

In contrast to fresh ones, colored eggs are considered a “processed egg product”.

This means they are not subject to the same strict rules.

In practice, this means that the eggs do not need a stamp that provides information about their origin.

You also don't necessarily know which attitude they come from.

It may be worse than expected.

Although it has been illegal to kill male chicks in Germany since the beginning of 2022, this can still be the case with Easter eggs.

The laying hens often come from abroad, where the laws are more relaxed.

What many people don't know is that keeping laying hens in batteries is not permitted.

However, it is legal to keep chickens in specially designed cages.

But that doesn't mean that the animals are doing much better there.

Is species-appropriate husbandry important to you?

Also pay attention to the following factors when buying Easter eggs from the supermarket:

  • If possible, use organic quality eggs.

  • Buy colored eggs with the KAT logo - these are guaranteed not to be from cage farming.

  • Choose eggs from brother rooster projects that do not kill male chicks.

    The

    German Animal Welfare Association,

for example, recommends eggs with the Demeter label.

Alternative to ready-made Easter eggs: dye them yourself!

Home-dyed eggs are a little more complicated, but more beautiful and healthier.

All you have to do is pre-boil the eggs for at least ten minutes and then color them with egg dye.

Natural color from onion broth is even healthier.

With these dyeing methods, you are sure to find many creative ways to decorate your eggs.

With a little skill, the result looks like a painting.

So nothing stands in the way of the egg hunt - if the weather is bad, the Easter egg hunt can even be done indoors.
