The choice of eggs has its pitfalls: taste, quality, husbandry.

Öko-Test now provides answers to the question of which egg is the best.

Stirred, boiled, painted or in cake – eggs are extremely popular in Germany.

No wonder, they can be used in so many different ways.

But for taste and conscience the question naturally arises: Which eggs are the best?

Öko-Test looked into this and came to a clear conclusion (more test reports can be found here).

Which is the best egg?

The best egg is one thing above all: organic.

Öko-Test proved this in its large egg test report.

While all of the eggs tested did not contain any significant amounts of pollutants, some had defects.

However, some organic eggs can convince the testers.

They were able to convince not only with their few pollutants, but also with their quality and the supply chain.

When it came to quality, the experts paid particular attention to whether the shell was intact, whether it was clean or had feces and blood stains and whether the producer code could be seen on the shell.

After extensive testing, they finally came to a clear conclusion.

HEIDELBERG24 presents the best eggs:

  • A well-rounded affair 6 organic eggs, Naturland (model poultry farm L. Häde) – grade: “very good”

  • Alnatura 10 organic eggs, Bioland – grade: “very good”

  • K-Bio 6 fresh eggs, Bioland (Kaufland Biovum) – grade: “very good”

Which eggs have the best care?

Many of the eggs tested in the Öko-Test deliver depressing results, particularly when it comes to animal welfare.

While some people can often only provide incomplete evidence of supply chains from breeding to the packaging station, the testers are not convinced by what others can partially prove.

Organic eggs are better.

Most chickens have more space in the coop and also outside.

If you want to be on the safe side, buy locally or take a closer look at the codes printed on the eggs.

There you will usually find an identifier for the type of husbandry, an abbreviation for the country of origin, a car registration number and a producer identification number.

For these types of husbandry, the number is at the beginning of the identifier:

Which is better: barn or free-range eggs?

But with all the information about free range farming – what do the different husbandry levels actually mean?

In Germany there are primarily three permitted forms of husbandry: free-range farming, barn farming and cage farming.

The only form of cage keeping that is still permitted is called small group keeping, in which one hen lives on 80 square centimeters.

Barn farming means that the chickens are only kept in the coop.

According to the Nature Conservation Association, nine animals share one square meter.

In free-range farming, on the other hand, the animals are at least given space to run in an enclosure.

Each hen gets four square meters of space outside and can run around, bathe in the sand, scratch and peck.

Free-range farming is therefore more animal-friendly and therefore better than barn farming.

Organic is even better: only six laying hens are allowed per square meter in the barn.

The number of animals is limited to 3,000.

There is usually a code on factory farmed eggs that tells you where the egg comes from.

It is important to pay attention to free-range farming.

Which supermarket has the best organic eggs?

If you have an Alnatura market around the corner, you can confidently get the Bioland eggs, which are among the test winners.

But Kaufland also has good organic eggs from its own brand, K-Bio.

The Demeter organic market also achieved a “very good” grade for its Lindengut organic eggs.

But even if they are organic, you shouldn't eat too many eggs.
