The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has ordered the creation of a High State Commission "against fascism and neo-fascism", the project of which will be presented in the next few hours to the National Assembly with a government majority.
The new entity will be created in response to the "acts of violence" that occurred in 2014, 2015 and 2017, said Vice President Delcy Rodríguez.
Those facts caused "serious consequences for the economy, sovereignty and territorial integrity, compromised by extremist factors who took control of the Venezuelan Parliament in 2015 to deprive the country of its resources and create internal destabilization", argued Rodríguez .
The announcement comes amid the registration of candidates for the July 28 presidential election, where Maduro, 61, will seek a third term that could see him remain in power for nearly two decades.
The initiative is seen by the opposition as a further pretext to suffocate movements and parties opposed to 'Chavismo', as confirmed by the wave of arrests that have occurred in recent weeks and also denounced internationally.
