Disposable e-cigarettes will be banned in Belgium from 2025.
The country is thus taking on a pioneering role in the EU.
Munich – “This is another milestone in our fight against smoking.”
With these words, Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke announced the future ban on the sale of disposable e-cigarettes in Belgium on Saturday (March 23).
In a press release, Vandenbroucke emphasized: “Disposable e-cigarettes are very damaging to society and the environment.
This harmful product primarily targets our young people.
So I'm glad I can take them off the market."
The EU Commission has approved this ban, making Belgium the first EU country to ban such single-use products.

As the Health Minister explains, smoking is one of the main causes of preventable illness and death in Belgium.
This is reported by the Belgian news agency Belga.
As part of his plan to combat tobacco consumption, Vandenbroucke has introduced a number of measures.
These measures are intended to motivate people to stop smoking and at the same time prevent non-smokers from starting to smoke.
Researchers also warn against harmful consumption.
“With this step, we are removing an extremely harmful product from the market that is also cheap and therefore attractive to young people.
“Belgium is leading the way in Europe in weakening the tobacco lobby,” the minister said in a statement.
The Belgian association of e-cigarette retailers and distributors, VapeBel, welcomed the decision on Monday (March 25), Belga reported.
What is a disposable e-cigarette?
Disposable e-cigarettes are filled with a non-refillable flavored liquid and have a non-rechargeable battery.
After use, they become electronic waste.
With traditional e-cigarettes, the liquid can be refilled.
“Smoke-free generation”: Belgium enforces ban on the sale of disposable e-cigarettes
The royal decree banning the sale of disposable e-cigarettes is still being drafted.
The ban should then take effect from January 1, 2025.
This will make Belgium the first country in Europe to ban the sale of disposable e-cigarettes - with the exception of the United Kingdom, which is outside the European Union.

Already in 2021, the European Commission minister had proposed a regulation to ban disposable e-cigarettes in order to realize his vision of a “smoke-free generation”.
According to Vandenbroucke, the submitted dossier was approved this week.
Disposable e-cigarettes are also popular in Germany.
But a battery regulation could mean its end in 2026.
