Actors for animal protection: The Albert Schweizer Foundation uses the influence of TV celebrities to demand better housing conditions at Lidls meat suppliers.

Frankfurt – Katja Riemann, Ursula Karven, Karin Hanczewski and Martin Brambach currently have another thing in common in addition to their acting careers: they are all part of a new campaign video by the Albert Schweizer Foundation, which advocates for more animal protection, in which they take a closer look at the discounter Lidl Call for change.

Specifically, this is about the grievances in the stables of Lidl's European suppliers.

Since October 2022, the foundation has been publishing images and videos from chicken farms across Europe that supply meat to Lidl.

The footage shows how devastating the situation is.

For example, a video from an English company shows chickens being run over by a forklift.

Last year, multi-resistant germs were also discovered in the company's meat products.

“Hey Lidl”: TV celebrities call on discounters to take action

The new campaign is the foundation's next attempt to get the supermarket group to take action.

“Hey Lidl!” the actors explain at the beginning of the video, addressing the company directly.

They also do this at other points in the video: “Why do you refuse to take responsibility for this?”

They demand: “Stop the cruelest practices in chicken farming now.

Take responsibility for the fate of these animals.” Part of the campaign is also a petition that has already been signed by 563,011 people.

Attack on Lidl: The company should join the broiler initiative

With the video and the petition, the foundation would like to ensure that the company joins the “fattening chicken initiative”.

The aim of the initiative, launched by European animal welfare organizations, is to improve the conditions in which chickens for fattening are kept.

Around 600 companies worldwide have now committed to implementing the initiative's requirements by 2026.

This includes, among other things, compliance with European animal protection law and the obligation not to keep broiler chickens in cages.

In Germany, Aldi, Bünting, Globus, Tegut and Norma have already joined the initiative.

Lidl, on the other hand, is not yet part of it, and celebrities criticize that.

When asked by IPPEN.MEDIA, the parent company Schwarz explained: “Wherever our actions have an impact on people, animals and the environment, we use our influence for positive changes.”

In addition, the spokeswoman for the Schwarz Group pointed out that they wanted to expand the form of husbandry for all animal species to levels three and four - the two highest levels - by 2030.

The Lidl website provides an overview of the types of housing and their criteria.
