Promote weight loss, have a positive effect on digestion and protect the kidneys: Pu-erh tea is said to have many health-promoting effects.
But is that true?
Pu-erh tea comes from China and has been drunk there for centuries.
The tea variety is grown on a large scale in southern China.
It is obtained from the leaves of the Assam variety of the tea plant and refined using a special manufacturing process: Pu-Erh tea is fermented.
This means that microorganisms are active and change the components of the tea leaves as part of their metabolic processes.
This manufacturing process, among other things, is said to be responsible for the health-promoting effects of Pu-Erh tea.
The type of tea is said to be able to support a slimming diet* thanks to its appetite-suppressing effect
.
Drinking tea is also said to have a positive effect on digestion.
Pu-erh tea can also regulate blood sugar levels, prevent kidney diseases and even kill cancer cells, as reported by the
fitbook
portal, among others .
But how healthy is tea really?
Pu-erh tea melts body fat and inhibits the growth of cancer cells - but only in laboratory and animal tests
In fact, there is evidence that the tea can promote weight loss - although this effect was shown in animal experiments and not in a human study.
Zhen-Hui Cao from the Faculty of Animal Science and Technology at Yunnan Agricultural University in China was able to show in a study that rats given puh-erh tea extracts lost body fat.
In addition, Cao was able to prove in the experiment that puh-erh tea significantly reduced the total cholesterol in the plasma of the rats
.
Studies still need to be carried out to determine whether this is also the case in humans.
The anti-cancer effect of puh-erh tea has also been scientifically proven - but only in test tubes and in animal experiments.
Here, Xin Zhao from the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering at the Chongqing University of Education in China was able to show that puh-erh tea can have anti-cancer effects.
He and his team investigated how the extracts from the tea affect oral cancer cells.
The scientists were able to show that Pu-Erh tea has an inhibitory effect on tongue cancer cells.
The Chinese researchers' study conclusion: "These results show that Pu-erh tea has cancer-preventive and anti-metastatic effects on buccal mucosa cancer, the higher the concentration, the better the efficiency."
How exactly people benefit from puh-erh tea has not yet been scientifically proven.
However, Puh-Erh tea has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries
.
And many tea connoisseurs also swear by the stimulating and digestive effects of puh-erh tea.
