Parmigiano Reggiano companies close 2023 with a consumer turnover of 3.05 billion euros against 2.9 billion in 2022, with an increase of 5%.

The Consortium for the protection of Parmigiano Reggiano announced this today in Milan with the presentation of the final data for 2023.

The economic report records positive results for total sales in volume (+8.4%), supported - analysts underline - by a positive trend in exports (+5.7%) and by sales in Italy (+10.9 %).

Production was stable compared to 2022 at around 4 million wheels.

Italy - informs the protection body - accounts for 57%, with large-scale distribution (large-scale organized distribution) remaining the first channel, while the export share today represents 43%, with a growth of 5.7% and particularly positive results in the USA, the first foreign market for the PDO (+7.7%), but also in Spain, France and Australia.

In 2023, the total visitors to the dairies of the district were 170,000, an increase of 10% on 2022. Caseifici Aperti, an event promoted by the Consortium which twice a year offers enthusiasts the opportunity to visit the participating dairies and discover the secrets of PDO processing (the spring 2024 edition is scheduled for Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st April).

The two events in 2023 recorded 24,500 participants, with an increase of 19.5% on 2022.

"In the near future, the Consortium - states Nicola Bertinelli, president of the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium - will have to invest more and more in growth in foreign markets, which represent the future of our PDO. We are going through a moment of strong change, in which clarity the inevitable revolutions of the future, the issue of sustainability; the management of production costs in a scenario of global uncertainty; protection in the global dimension of markets and free trade agreements; the new sensitivities of consumers".
