Bad injury for Andy Murray.
In the final stages of the match lost the day before yesterday against the Czech Tomas Machac, the Scotsman suffered a bad sprain of his left ankle which, although not preventing him from completing the match, forced the now thirty-six year old former world no. of the investigations which decreed the complete rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament and the partial rupture of the calcaneofibular ligament.
Murray himself broke the news through his social media profiles: "Yesterday, towards the end of my match in Miami, I reported the complete rupture of my 'ATFL' and the partial rupture of my 'CFL'. Once I get home I will see myself with a specialist to evaluate what the next steps will be. There is no need to even say how hard it is to accept and that I will be out of action for a long period. But when the time comes I will return, even with one hip and without any ligaments in the ankle".
The injury couldn't have had a worse timing.
In fact, it was Murray himself who announced a few weeks ago that he would not continue to play beyond this summer, suggesting that his intention was to bring the curtain down on his career in front of his home Wimbledon crowd, and then try to take part in the Olympics "only if I feel capable of winning a medal".
