Miscanthus only serves as a privacy screen?
Wrong thought.
The shreds of the pretty ornamental grass can also be used for mulching in the garden.
Mulch is essential in the garden.
It protects plants and soil from frost and predators and ensures a better soil climate.
It also prevents weed growth and can act as a natural fertilizer.
There are many alternatives to bark mulch: lawn clippings, straw, leaves or wood scraps.
Anyone who cuts their ornamental grasses now will find what they are looking for here too.
What you need to consider if you want to use miscanthus as mulch.
Use the pruning wisely
Miscanthus can also serve as a substitute for mulch.

March and April are the perfect time to prune ornamental grasses.
If you cut them before winter, you deprive animals of a place to retreat on frosty days.
In March there are hardly any new shoots - perfect for pruning.
The following must be taken into account:
Cut the ornamental grasses back so that only about 15 centimeters remain above the ground.
According to My Beautiful Garden,
it's best to use
pruning shears with leverage as the blades are very strong.
Wear gloves as miscanthus has sharp edges.
The miscanthus shreds are light and pH-neutral and are also better suited for roses and herbs than bark mulch, as the latter is slightly acidic.
In contrast to conventional bark mulch, miscanthus shreds have several edges and thus deter snails.
Make sure that you only use the stalks and leaves for mulching.
The silvery-white panicles, however, are not suitable because they are too light and could cause the shreds to mold.

When you mulch with ornamental grasses, less water evaporates and a lot of moisture is stored in the soil.
Applied to the bed, it prevents weed growth.
So that the mulch sticks better to the ground, you should water it.
This way the wind can't blow it away.
You can also mulch beds cheaply with cardboard.
