Delivery difficulties, market withdrawals and production relocation – the shortage of medicines in Germany is becoming more and more of a problem.

Top doctor gives tips for patients.

Is it necessary for medicines to be produced in Germany to ensure good patient care?

This question was now discussed by the CSU's health and care policy working group in Munich.

Michael Hennrich, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Drug Manufacturers, emphasized that bureaucratic hurdles must be reduced and regulatory relief created.

How does the migration of pharmaceutical production affect patients and what can individuals do?

Susanne Sasse spoke for 24vita.de and the Ippen media group with private lecturer Dr.

Dominik Pförringer, orthopedic surgeon in Munich.

Medication is often missing - such as cough syrups, antibiotics and antidepressants.

Do you know such problems from your practice?

Not a day goes by when I don't miss some medication.

For example, local anesthetics, which we are constantly lacking.

For example, various dosages and combinations have not been available for some time.

An orthopedic surgeon needs these products relatively regularly, among other things, to treat musculoskeletal dysfunctions, so-called imbalances.

I always have to resort to replacement manufacturers or other combinations, which severely limits everyday life.

Basic medications such as aspirin or zinc are also missing as infusion solutions.

I regularly speak to German manufacturers who tell me that they will no longer receive raw materials from Asia for an indefinite period of time.

Have we in Germany allowed ourselves to be taken over in the pharmaceutical sector?

This is probably the case in many areas, for example with generics, where the price war dominates and in Germany it is no longer possible to produce them as cheaply as it is possible elsewhere.

Also because in other regions, for example, there are no environmental protection regulations and contaminated wastewater is largely discharged without being treated.

No antibiotic has been manufactured in Germany for more than ten years.

So we have become globally dependent in the clear knowledge that an antibiotic, for example, can make the difference between life and death.

“It is also important to have an on-site pharmacy that provides competent advice and offers personal and individual service,” says Munich orthopedic surgeon PD Dr.

Dominik Pförringer.

Can patients also make a difference here?

I make the following comparison: I only get into German vehicles at a taxi rank.

As a doctor, I prefer to prescribe products that are manufactured in Germany and therefore meet the high German standards.

Patients can also make sure to prefer products that they can rely on because they are made in Germany.

It's about maintaining quality, reliability and reliability.

In this context, one should not forget the local pharmacies: Not a week goes by that I don't personally speak to the pharmacy on the phone about details regarding medication and prescriptions.

This service benefits my patients and is not available in this form from an online provider.

This personal exchange is important.

Having a person on the line who can help, who can provide competent advice and who will take care of it until the issue is resolved, that makes the difference.

A person who, for example, when a medication is not available, looks for an adequate alternative.

No queues, no anonymous online searches.

What is your outlook for the future?

In the wake of the pandemic situation and other crises, we have realized that we have to stick together and work together at the German and European level.

It's about knowing who reliable partners are and not just about whether a digital contact offers the cheapest price in the short term.

Germany is a prime location that needs to be believed in and supported.

The economic conditions must be such that it is interesting for skilled workers to work here again.

The regulatory framework for companies also needs to be improved.

In addition, energy costs must fall significantly so that even more energy-intensive companies do not migrate.
